I was watching Hacks (a show that's quickly become my comfort watch) when a single line made me laugh out loud.

Ava's mom is visiting her in LA. She's casually rummaging through Ava’s fridge, then suddenly calls out, entirely serious:

"Ava, are you eating enough soup?"

The sincerity made it hilarious.

But it also struck a chord. How often do we fixate on our own versions of "soup"; those comforting but minor details, instead of focusing on bigger, more meaningful issues, especially in web design?

I've worked with founders who got so caught up in tiny design details that they completely missed the essence of their messaging. And yes, it makes a huge difference. They aimed for something flashy, yet ultimately, all that flash didn't amount to much. Sometimes you can gently guide clients back on track, other times you have to accept the flow, or gracefully step away. (Speaking of which, maybe I should write a blog post on why micromanaging can be so damaging?)
